Restoration | Mzuzu, Malawi

CMS are assisting a European based NGO called Wells for Zoe with a soil conservation program.

Wells for Zoe plant indigenous trees where trees have been cut down to make charcoal which is in high demand in the cities of Malawi. CMS determined that it is pointless to plant trees where the topsoil has, or is, eroding away and have implemented a soil conservation plan that stabilizes exposed slopes throughout the tree restoration area in Northern Malawi. Erosion control methods were specifically designed for local conditions and that can be implemented at low cost with minimal training of the Wells for Zoe workers. CMS also assist with the improvement of the eight tree nurseries and are investigating improved in-field planting methods.
