The handbook was completed in mid- 2025 and is a practical guideline for operational field rangers in Africa. We had the book published and printed with a donation from Megafreight supported by the Pure Wild Fund NPC and we will distribute the books free of charge to the field rangers of Africa. The book is also available to non-field rangers at a nominal fee to help with future printing costs.
This dedicated group of field rangers, who work at the coal face of nature conservation all over Africa, often in dangerous circumstances, need all the help that they can get to be successful with their very demanding task. Our experiences with field rangers in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi and South Africa helped to highlight the needs of the field rangers, some of which we captured in the handbook.
The various sections of the handbook can be used as modules for field ranger training and has already been used for a number of training courses presented by our associate and part author Div de Villiers. Otherwise it can simply used as a reference guide for effective patrolling, safety, observation recording, nature conservation, mobility and general law enforcement.
The book has already been distributed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and parts of South Africa (Mkambati, Clarens, Borakolalo & Komatipoort).
